New Year’s Remodeling Resolution:
Start Soon!
For many of us, our homes take center stage during the holiday season. And often, as we decorate and share this special season with friends and family, we think how nice it would be to do that remodeling project we’ve dreamed about for so long. Perhaps holiday cooking has you finally ready to update your kitchen. Or, perhaps you’ve decided that this is the last year you’re going to crowd everyone into small spaces and you’ll go ahead and do a major whole house renovation – a real guest room, a spacious gathering room, updated bathrooms and that new kitchen! The fact is, no matter what size remodeling project you’re thinking of for 2011, you should make this New Year’s Resolution: start planning your project now.
Make sure your newly remodeled
space is ready when you want it
From design to permits to fixtures, a lot of “pieces” go into even the simplest remodeling projects. Depending on your project, the timeline can take anywhere from three weeks to nine months. For example, if you’d like to enjoy a new deck or sunroom this summer, construction needs to begin by spring – so planning should start early in January. If you want “home for the holidays” next year to include a completely remodeled home or major kitchen remodel or home addition, it can take months to decide details, create plans, secure permits, and choose and order appliances, fixtures and finishes before construction can even begin. Bottom line: now is the time to start talking with your remodeler.
Give yourself plenty of time to create that “wow” factor
Beautiful, well-designed remodeling projects don’t have to cost more. But they usually take a little more time. That’s because the more carefully they’re mapped out – design, space planning, consideration of all the product options – the more opportunities you and your remodeler will have to discover little “extras” and innovations that can be incorporated into the project to create that wow factor. By starting early in the new year, you’ll have plenty of time to explore options and make sure you don’t overlook great ideas for increasing the beauty and functionality of your project and perhaps saving significant money in terms of long-term home energy or maintenance costs.
Don’t miss out on the chance to work with good remodelers
While remodeling has been slow for several years, the best remodelers continue to be busy and their schedules are already starting to fill for the year ahead. Remember, the professionalism and personality of your remodeler is a huge factor in enjoying a successful and stress-free remodeling experience.
